No more coffee for you!


Lies. While we’d avoid going for a triple-shot Americano, the general consensus among the medical community is that 200mg a day of caffeine (which is also found in tea, Coke and even chocolate) should be your limit. 

Morning sickness means it's a girl



This isn’t necessarily true – but it could be. Studies have found women with hyperemesis gravidarum, or extreme nausea and vomiting (affects three in 1,000 women), more often carry girls. This is because levels of the pregnancy hormone hCG, which triggers morning sickness, tend to be higher in mothers who are pregnant with girls…

Easy on the cheese


Not so much. Varieties such as cheddar and Swiss are harmless as they’ve been pasteurised. But soft, unpasteurised cheeses such as Brie, feta and goat cheese could pose a problem. 

‘So long, seafood.’ (sniffs)



Nope! Moderation is the key here. But you can help by opting for low-mercury varieties such as salmon, shrimp and tilapia. Swordfish and tilefish have the highest mercury levels, so they’re out.

Exercise is bad for you


Incorrect. In fact, low-impact workouts are a great way to keep your weight in check and while preparing your body for labour and beyond. Contact sports and exercises calling you to lie on your back are a no-no. View our Pregnancy exercises here
