Which Vitamins Do I Need?

It’s a health jungle out there. We’re here to help you wade your way through it

Being pregnant, especially for the first time, can feel like an overwhelming responsibility, but it’s easy when you know how – and that’s what we’re here for!

There are some seriously easy steps you can take to make sure your baby develops healthily and happily – supplements are about to become your new best friends.

For starters, lap up the vitamin D like those apple-flavoured Tic Tacs we’re slightly obsessing over here at Secret Saviours Towers. This regulates calcium and phosphate to ensure healthy bones and teeth in your little one. Vitamin D should be taken throughout your pregnancy, preferably 10 micrograms a day and post-birth if breastfeeding, according to the NHS.

Vitamin D can be found in oily fish including salmon, mackerel and sardines as well as eggs and meat. We also get it from being exposed to the sun but you don’t need to bake in it to reap the benefits, so you can put the bathing suit back!

You’re also recommended to have 400 micrograms of folic acid a day until the end of your first trimester. This B vitamin is good for the healthy development of your baby and can also be found in various foods, such as leafy vegetables and brown rice.

Vitamin C is great for protecting cells and can be enjoyed in citrus fruits, blackcurrants, tomatoes, broccoli and kale.

It’s hard to get the sufficient amount of vitamins recommended during pregnancy from foods, which is why supplements are an invaluable option.

Ask your favourite pharmacist for the best supplements and always consult your doctor before trying anything new.
