There’s more than one way to get that glow
By now you probably know about the pregnancy side effect that causes your skin to flare up like an adolescent’s. But you’ll be pleased to know there are things you can do to help.
Water
For starters, if you want generally good skin during pregnancy and beyond, drinking water works wonders! Dehydration dries out your skin and can make you appear wrinkled. It also flushes toxins out of your body, ridding your skin of bacteria and dirt. The NHS reckons women should drink 1.6 litres of water a day. So try carrying a flask of water with you everywhere you go and take a swig when you can. Before you know it, you’ll be craving it more than crisps dipped in chocolate sauce.
Exercise
A good workout isn’t just about keeping your weight down. It’s also great for your skin! Exercising increases your blood flow, boosting oxygen and nutrients throughout the body, especially the skin. If you’re not a gym bunny, maybe start off soft with some moves we’ve devised with our favourite personal trainer Natasha Brown.
Food
Yes! We can maintain perfect skin by eating! The catch? Eating healthily. But it’s not as dull as you might think. Stock up on plenty of fruit, namely anything with vitamin C. That includes strawberries, blackcurrants, blueberries, kiwi fruit and of course oranges. Broccoli and sweet potatoes are also a great source of vitamin C. Vitamin E (almonds, avocado, hazelnuts, pine nuts) is also great for the skin. As well as adding to your diet, you might do well to get rid of some things. Sugar, for example, is just plain bad! So stay away from the sweets.
Sleep
Perhaps the best one of all, nothing helps the skin quite like a good sleep. When you’re in a deep sleep, your body produces growth hormones, aiding the repair of skin tissue. Plus, during the day, you’re exposed to all sorts of pollution and other yucky stuff. Sleeping offers you a chance to mend itself. They don’t call it ‘Beauty Sleep’ for nothing!
Skin Care Products
If all else fails, keep your face moisturised with your favourite products. We love this Wonderglow Primer by Charlotte Tilbury (£38.50). It corrects your skin tone while improving skin elasticity and sealing in moisture. Plus, it smells fab, with floral accents of rose hip oil and camellia oil.
