Can Stretch Marks Be Removed? What the Science Really Says

  • 3 min read

Quick version: not completely. Stretch marks are scars, and nothing, no cream, retinol, oil or laser, fully erases a scar. Early red or purple marks can fade a lot with the right care, mature white ones can improve in texture and tone but not vanish, and prevention is the only thing that reliably stops them in the first place.

It’s a frustrating answer if you came here hoping for an eraser. But it’s the truth, and it’ll save you money on things that don’t work.

Pregnancy bump with visible stretch marks, held by two hands

First, the honest bit

A stretch mark is a small scar in the dermis, the deep layer of skin. "Removal" is the wrong word for any scar. Anything promising to erase stretch marks completely is overselling. What you can realistically aim for is fading: making them less visible, smoother, and closer to your surrounding skin tone. With the early ones, that can be a big improvement.

What the evidence says actually helps

Time and hydration. Boring, but true. Most marks fade over the first year, and well-hydrated skin fades better and itches less while it is at it.

Centella asiatica. One of the few topical ingredients with genuine research behind it for scar appearance and collagen. It’s the active ingredient in our Day Gel for exactly that reason.

Retinoids. Effective on early marks, but off-limits during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Park them for later, and only with your GP’s go-ahead.

In-clinic treatments. Microneedling, laser and radiofrequency are the serious options for mature marks. They can genuinely improve them, but they cost, take several sessions, and are a post-pregnancy job.

What doesn’t really work, despite the hype

A single tub of cocoa butter or a "miracle" oil will soothe dryness, but it can’t reach the layer where the mark formed, so it won’t remove anything. Coffee scrubs, essential-oil blends and most "stretch mark erasers" fall into the same bucket: pleasant, not transformative.

Why prevention beats removal, every time

Here’s the thing the removal industry would rather not lead with: it is far easier to stop a stretch mark forming than to fade one afterwards. Because they form in the dermis, surface products were never going to be enough on their own. That’s the logic of the Band Kit: a Derma Dot™ support band holds the deep layer steady as your bump grows, while the Day Gel and Night Cream care for the surface. If you’re still pregnant, or planning another, that’s where your money and effort go furthest.

Prevention works on the dermis, where marks actually form — the layer a surface cream can’t reach.

If you already have them

If they’re fresh and still coloured, act now: hydrate daily, bring in centella, and be patient through the first year. If they’re white and settled, you can improve them, but keep your expectations honest, and look at in-clinic options later if it matters to you. And if there’s a next pregnancy ahead, prevention is the real win.

So can stretch marks be removed? Not fully. But they can be faded, sometimes a lot, and they can largely be prevented. That’s a more honest, more useful answer than any "erase them forever" promise.

FAQ

Can stretch marks be removed completely?

No. They’re scars, and no product or procedure fully erases a scar. You can fade them, especially while they’re new, but not remove them entirely.

Can laser remove stretch marks?

Laser can noticeably improve mature stretch marks over several sessions, but it doesn’t completely remove them, and it’s a post-pregnancy treatment.

Do stretch mark creams really work?

Creams help by hydrating and, with proven actives like centella, softening the look of newer marks. They can’t reach the dermis, so they work best as part of a routine, not as a standalone cure.

Is it too late to treat old white stretch marks?

Not too late to improve them with hydration or in-clinic treatments, but white marks are settled scars, so full removal isn’t realistic.
