Maternity underwear for a working day: try the sitting-down test

  • 3 min read

Maternity underwear for work needs to feel comfortable in the positions you actually use. That may mean sitting at a desk, getting on a train, reaching a shelf or being on your feet. A good fit standing still is only part of the test.

Try a new pair with your usual work clothes and spend a few minutes moving and sitting before deciding. A waistband that only behaves when you are perfectly upright is unlikely to become more cooperative by four o’clock.

Test the whole outfit together

Underwear, tights and trousers can place several edges across the same area. If everything starts to feel tight, work out which layer is responsible.

Sit in a chair similar to the one you use at work. Lean forward slightly, stand again and check whether anything rolls, shifts or leaves you wanting to adjust it.

You should not need to choose a smaller size to make a supportive garment do its job. Use the relevant measurements and fit instructions.

Think about your commute

The clothes you wear while travelling are part of the work outfit too. A coat, bag strap or tightly fastened trouser waist may change how the layers feel once you sit down.

If you carry a spare pair, put it somewhere easy to reach with a small bag for the used one. This can be a useful precaution for a long day, but it is not a substitute for sorting out a consistently poor fit.

Check that changing clothes in the toilets is manageable. Complicated layers can be tiresome in a small cubicle, particularly when you are already late for a meeting.

Match maternity underwear to the cut of your work clothes

Some people prefer an over-bump rise; others are happier with an edge sitting below it. Neither choice wins automatically. Your trousers, body shape and preference matter.

The Secret Saviours Brief is an over-bump option with internal Derma Dots, designed for use as part of the brand’s skincare routine. If you choose it, check your current bump measurement against the Band and Brief size guide.

Use it as directed, with Day Gel and skin contact. Putting another garment underneath for warmth changes the intended setup; add clothing over it instead. The routine page explains the order.

Check the fabric after a few minutes

Notice the leg openings, gusset and seams as well as the waistband. An item can fit around the bump and still be uncomfortable elsewhere.

If the fabric feels hot or irritating, adding more products or pulling it tighter is unlikely to answer the fit question. Choose a different combination and seek advice if discomfort persists or you have symptoms that concern you.

For new underwear, follow the retailer’s try-on instructions and preserve tags and hygiene protection where required. Check the returns policy before washing or wearing it for a full shift.

Keep a reliable combination ready

Once an outfit works, plan when its base layers will be washed and dried. Having the right pants clean on the morning you need them is an underrated piece of preparation.

You do not need a different maternity wardrobe for every weekday. A few combinations that let you get on with your job are a much better starting point.
