Winter maternity layers that don't leave everything digging in

  • 3 min read

The problem with layering winter maternity clothes is often the number of waistbands involved. Pants, tights, trousers and a fitted top can each feel reasonable on their own. Add them together and getting dressed becomes rather less comfortable.

Start with one comfortable base, then add layers you can take off indoors. You may be able to use far more of your existing wardrobe than you expect.

Start with the layers underneath, before choosing a jumper

Put on the underwear and trousers or tights you intend to wear together. Sit down, lean forward and reach for something. Does an edge roll? Are two bands pressing on the same spot? Can you move without pulling everything back into place?

Changing one layer is usually more useful than covering an uncomfortable combination with a bigger jumper.

If you wear Secret Saviours supportwear, follow the three-step routine: the garment needs the intended skin contact over Day Gel. A vest underneath it changes that arrangement. Add your clothing layers over the correctly fitted garment instead.

Outfit one: the cardigan you already own

A comfortable base top, maternity trousers and an open cardigan make a straightforward everyday outfit. The cardigan does not have to meet in the middle to earn its keep.

Try it with a scarf or coat for outside, then take those off indoors. Check that the top is long enough for you to sit and reach without spending the day tugging at it.

A buttoned cardigan can also be worn open over a dress. Before buying something described as maternity knitwear, see whether changing how you wear an existing piece solves the problem.

Outfit two: a dress with one comfortable leg layer

A roomy dress can make waistbands less complicated. The tights or leggings beneath it still need to fit comfortably, particularly once you sit down.

Avoid choosing a smaller size because you want them to hold everything in. Check the current measurements and the rise of the garment instead.

The Secret Saviours Leggings Kit is an option if you want its particular coverage and skincare routine. Use the shape and size guide, which asks for bump and hip measurements for leggings. They do not have to be part of every winter outfit, and an extra pair of tight layers over them may be more than you want.

Outfit three: a shirt with a removable warm layer

A loose shirt over a comfortable top gives you options when a heated room feels much warmer than the pavement outside. Add a cardigan or jacket for the trip.

Check sleeve room with everything on. A coat that fits over a T-shirt may feel restrictive over a thick jumper, even if the bump itself has plenty of space.

If your own coat still works worn open, you may not need a replacement immediately. If it leaves you cold or restricts movement, that is a practical reason to find another option, whether borrowed, second-hand or new.

Do the final check sitting down

Spend a few minutes in the finished outfit before cutting tags off anything new. Include the shoes and outer layer. Clothes need to work for the bus, desk, sofa and lunch table as well as the mirror.

Keep the combinations that feel good together in mind. Having two or three reliable outfits is considerably more useful on a cold morning than a drawer full of things that almost work.
