Maternity bras and nursing bras: what is the difference?

  • 3 min read

A maternity bra is designed for changing breasts during pregnancy. A nursing bra also provides feeding access, often through clips or a pull-aside construction. Some bras do both jobs, but you need to check the actual design. “Suitable after birth” does not automatically mean “easy to breastfeed in”.

It is a useful distinction when a drawer full of perfectly good bras has suddenly become a drawer full of things you cannot wait to take off.

Maternity bra or nursing bra? Start with the job you need it to do

For pregnancy, you may mainly want a comfortable fit beneath clothes. Think about the underband, cup space, straps and the amount of coverage you like.

For feeding, add access to that list. Can the relevant part open easily? Can you manage it with one hand? Does the rest of the garment stay where you want it? A mechanism that looks clever in a product photograph may feel fiddly in use.

If pumping is part of your plan, check pump compatibility separately. Nursing access and hands-free pump support are different features. Do not assume a bra provides both unless the manufacturer says so.

Check bra fit without relying on the old label

Use the measuring instructions for the brand and style you are considering. If you are buying the Secret Saviours Bra, our size guide uses bust and underbust measurements.

Once it is on, check the fit while sitting and moving your arms. Your breasts should sit within the cups, and the band and straps should feel secure without digging in. There should not be a fold of fabric you spend the morning trying to straighten.

If the fit has changed, reassess it. A familiar bra size is a useful starting point, not an obligation to keep buying the same thing.

What is the Secret Saviours Bra designed for?

Our Bra is a skin-support garment with Derma Dot™ technology, designed for use with Day Gel and Night Cream. Choose it for that purpose and the coverage it offers around the bust.

The current product description does not establish nursing clips or a dedicated feeding-access mechanism. If feeding access is your priority, check with us before buying and compare the design with a nursing bra.

The clinical report for the Secret Saviours system tested an abdominal band and skincare routine. It is not a separate trial of the Bra or of feeding comfort. Our breast stretch-mark guide explains that distinction.

Do you need to buy everything before the birth?

It is sensible to have something comfortable ready, but you do not have to commit to a large matching collection. Buy with room to reassess your preferences and fit.

If you plan to breastfeed, practise opening and closing the access on the bra you have chosen before packing it. Check how it works with your nightwear as well. A convenient bra beneath an awkward top is still an awkward combination.

The NHS hospital bag checklist includes comfortable bras and nursing bras where relevant.

You can own different bras for different jobs. The useful question is whether this one makes the part of your day you are buying it for easier.
