How many pairs of maternity knickers do you need?

  • 2 min read

How many maternity knickers you need depends on how often you change them, when you do laundry and how quickly they dry. Start with your normal routine, allow for the pairs waiting to be washed, and keep a spare. You do not need a large new collection just because a multipack exists.

The awkward bit is usually the day when the last comfortable pair is still damp.

Count every pair in the wash-and-dry cycle

Think beyond how often the machine runs. If you wash every other evening but clothes take another day to dry, those pairs are unavailable for longer than the wash itself.

Include the following:

  • The pair you are wearing.
  • Pairs already waiting for the wash.
  • Pairs still drying.
  • A clean spare for an extra change or delayed load.

These are planning categories, not a hygiene rule prescribing how many times you must change. Add more if your own circumstances mean extra changes are likely.

Example: washing most evenings

Suppose you wear one pair a day, wash that evening and have it dry by the following evening. You could wear pair A today, pair B tomorrow while A finishes drying, and keep pair C as a spare.

That three-pair example depends on quick, reliable turnaround. If the weather changes, the washing slips or the care label requires slower drying, it may stop working. The calculation is only as good as the laundry routine behind it.

Example: washing every third evening

Suppose you wear one pair on each of days one, two and three, then wash those three pairs together on the third evening. If they are not dry until the end of day four, you need a fourth pair to wear that day. A fifth gives you a spare.

You may prefer a larger cushion. The point is to make that choice from your real routine, rather than an unexplained recommendation to buy seven, ten or twelve.

Count ordinary pants and maternity supportwear separately

If you wear different underwear overnight, include that in your own count. Secret Saviours pregnancy supportwear is used during the day as part of the Day Gel, supportwear and Night Cream routine; the garment comes off at bedtime.

Do not assume one pair of support briefs replaces every pair of everyday pants in your drawer. Equally, you may not need to replace all the ordinary underwear that still fits comfortably.

Before ordering multiples of the Secret Saviours Brief, check the size guide and the care instructions for that garment. Try the fit before committing to a bigger rotation where the returns conditions allow.

Hospital packing is a different question

A hospital bag has to cope with an uncertain stay and limited access to washing. Use your unit’s guidance and the NHS hospital bag list for that job. Do not treat a minimal at-home rotation as a hospital packing recommendation.

If someone can bring extra clean things, prepare a small top-up bag and show them where it is.

Buy enough to make laundry boring

Start with a shape that fits, work out the turnaround and add a sensible spare. You can increase the rotation if the same shortage keeps happening. Comfortable underwear should make getting dressed easier, not give you a daily drying-rack calculation.
