About Stretch Marks

What are stretch marks?

A staggering 8 out of 10 women will get stretch marks during pregnancy (NHS UK). And many reports put this figure higher, at up to 90%. They are an everyday problem, affecting all skin types. During pregnancy, hormones soften fibres in the skin in preparation for labour, making it more susceptible to tears as the skin stretches.

stretch marksThink of a windscreen splitting downwards after a small crack appears from a flyaway stone. Stretch marks form in a similar way.  A small red dot will appear in the skin and then, already weakened, the skin will eventually tear downwards, at right angles to the body’s natural skin lines. These tears appear as red lines that eventually fade to a pale silvery colour after childbirth.

Stretch marks never disappear completely and can cause deep physical and emotional issues. We support today’s body positive attitude to skin imperfections, but we’ve been told by countless women that they’ve been emotionally scarred forever, when left with a tummy full of stretch marks.
