Midwife? Doula? We’ll show you how to find what you’re looking for
If this is your first time at this particular rodeo and you’re feeling at a loss, you might be surprised to know that you can find your very own pregnancy guardian angel. You’ll have to pay them, but they’ll get the job done.
Yes, we’re talking about private midwives. Independent midwives and those working with the NHS offer similar if not identical roles. The difference is private midwives focus more on planning home births. Although private midwives work separately from the NHS, they are still regulated by Nursing and Midwifery Council.
If you decide to hire a private midwife, you will still be entitled to NHS care, such as blood tests and pregnancy scans.
Doulas are another option for antenatal and postnatal support. According to Doula UK’s website, having a doula offers various benefits. These include “reducing intervention rates, shortening labour and improving the condition of babies at birth”.
The website adds, “It’s the less tangible benefits of having a non-judgemental companion during a life-altering event that most woman remember and value.”
