What Happens At My 20 Week Scan

It’s the moment of truth: all will be revealed…

Congratulations! You’re halfway there! You’re that bit closer to being able to paint your own toenails – or to even see them in the first place!

Of course, the 20-week mark means much more than that (surely?!). You’ll finally be able to know a bit more about your baby – like whether you’ll need to stock up on pink paint for the spare room, or blue.

Your ultrasound scan is a great opportunity to reassure you that all is going well with your little one: 10 fingers, 10 toes, your hair, dad’s nose… It will also give you a better idea of your due date.

Scans work by using sound waves to build a picture of the baby. Your scan will be carried out by a sonographer who’ll need to put some gel on your bump to ensure a clear reading. The sonographer will then run a probe over your tummy to send out ultrasound waves and then pick them up when they bounce back.

The scan does not hurt but the sonographer will need to apply a teeny bit of pressure to get the best view as this is the best opportunity to thoroughly assess your baby before he or she is ready to join us. The session will take around 20 minutes – maybe less – and you will have the results by the end of the scan. There’s also the option for a printout of the scan, but you’ll have to pay for this and the cost depends on the hospital. Expect to pay anything from £3 to a tenner.

You should even be able to bring friends and family, but we wouldn’t recommend a Mariah Carey entourage. Either way, please check with your hospital before rocking up 100-deep.

Ultrasound scans are usually offered to women at least twice during their pregnancy and have no known risks to mother or baby, but you don’t have to have one if you don’t want to.
